A lot of the flavor and nose of a high end Napa cab, just without quite the polish and sheen. A good trade-off at $20. Nose a little oak-laden; rich, dark berry flavors with good length. Have to agree with others that there's not a lot of sense of place here, but it's a well-made wine.

This wine has evolved -- there are some tertiary aromas from its having reduced a bit -- but I'm not sure I'd say it's improved. Decent acidity, some bright, sweet fruit, and some menthol/camphor notes -- but at the same time it mostly drinks like a 20-dollar cab from Anywhere, Earth. The thing in its favor is that while it doesn't necessarily seem to smack much of place, it doesn't come across as spoofulated at all.
I wouldn't wait much on this, though -- CT says till 2017, and I wouldn't wait that long.
Well, I'm surprised it has improved this much since my last tasting about a year ago. 86 to a 90 now. Not flabby anymore with a beautiful nose. Much more mid-palate flavors rolling on the tongue. Loaded with dark berries and camphor. Nice and dry. Decent length. I think it to be a pretty fair price now for an Andrew Jackson.

(SIGNATURE Cabernet Susana Balbo) Cabernet Dear Friends, As the wine-world descends on Ampuis, Montpellier and Angers your coolio-worthy wine for the next year is about to be secured by retailers and importers all over the US. Young-gun palates are everywhere, scurrying about trying to find the next crush of wine dreams – we’ll see. Over the following month, you are going to read about a plethora of unsulfured BIO/organic wines from every corner of the wine market (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing), but be warned – there’s a lot of bad wine out there and I tasted several hundred of them today (along with a few gems of course). What I'm most excited about is the energy – a palpable vibe of hope and togetherness regardless of origin or nationality. In wine (and life, for that matter), we are all in this together and nowhere is that more present than in a room full of eccentric BIO winemakers (with a few good vintages on the table, of course)... As the saying goes, “I can only consume so many bottles of 2009 St. Joseph and Cote Rotie barrel samples” so my thoughts turn to the most popular varietal on our shores: Cabernet Sauvignon. For some reason, Cabernet causes every nook and cranny of our Email List to come out of the woodwork and this price/value star is a mountain among lesser molehills (in other words, please let Niki know your interest at your earliest convenience). Today’s wine has nothing to do with France. Instead, it is a true reflection of Argentina’s history – European and noble with the broad horizon of the wild west by its side. While we rarely offer wine from Argentina or from producers that you can find at almost every corner-shop, this one is different – it epitomizes what we wish California Cabernet could be but so often is not: vinous and varietal but still toothy and strong. It remains decidedly balanced and harmonious without reliance on tricks or fun-house mirrors and the oak-aging is a compliment not a distraction. While it crosses a chasm between Old and New, its soul still lies in the soil and grace of its site-place: If you are looking for a top-drawer house-wine with every right to call itself collectable as well, here you go...keep in mind, unlike most Susana Balbo wines, there is very little of this for the US (current stocks of the 2008 Signature Cabernet are now completely sold out around the US)... FIRST COME FIRST SERVED up to 36/person until we run out: 2008 Susana Balbo Cabernet Sauvignon “Signature” (Mendoza) – (IWC91) (this is not the entry-level Crios or the regular Cabernet, compare at ) To order: niki@garagistewine.com This parcel is set to arrive with impeccable provenance in 3-4 weeks (please check OARS for local pick up after March 1st). quite delicious and still going strong. I agree that it is lacking a sense of place, but it is really tasty.

Among best Argentina cabs I’ve had. Very nice for $20. Just not quite the fruit polish of best Napa cabs.
