Blind Pinot Noir from Around The World (dbp's crib - Portland, OR): This has some crazy stuff going on, but it gets my attention, and it works out pretty well even though it wasn't what I was expecting. The nose is big, showing raspberry scents, some tomatoes, and some chocolate cake. With this diverse of a nose, my expectations for the palate were pretty low, but it all worked out. Dark character shows itself all the way across the palate. The cherries that show are very dark in nature while raspberries and limes make a brief appearance early on before being swallowed by the darker flavors. The complexity is certainly here, and the acidity is solid, but I find myself looking for a little more excitement from the fruit. 89+

Pinot Noirs from Around The World (BLIND!): Strange macerated berry component... this smells like Pinot Noir a few days into fermentation. Weird. I also get this strange honey covered barn aroma. Really funky and different. This doesn't even smell like wine to me, really... it smells more like a honey or woody maple syrup. I also got this menthol aroma on the night off that has fully disappeared the next day. Really big and fruity on the palate; more like fruit jam than wine. Really large in scale, with some funky hay covered in strawberry glaze and seaweed. Tannins build, but the 14.5% alcohol isn't all that intrusive. Lots of caramel here too. Wow, the finish initially attacks with a surprising caramel apple component. Pretty sweet throughout, I bet that this wine has some residual sugar. An interesting wine, but a strange wine. Definitely not what I would reach for when I wanted a nice contemplative Pinot Noir... it feels more like desert. * Leslie likes this.
