  • Purchased on release back in 1998, and cold cellared since then, this bottle was the perfect example of why I cellar wine. Still incredibly fresh, but with nuanced complexity from bottle age, it was simultaneously refreshing and intellectually engaging. The classic Nahe peach and cherry fruit was still fully present, accented with fruit crisp topping aromas, warm hay, fresh fallen leaves, and an integrated backbone of acidity that held each element in its place. In the modern idiom it was barely full Spätlese sweet, maybe not even that, and so it was very easy to drink, making the 375ml bottle not even close to enough. I'm not sure a magnum would have been enough. Well cared for bottles still have a long road ahead of them. I have one more, and will find the right moment - sooner or later.

  • Last bottle of this and I was hoping for some sort of uplift after the slightly disappointing previous bottles, but to be honest this was in the same mould, it just didn't hit the heights expected, no idea why, well cellared, given plenty of breathing time nothing intrinsically wrong just average and some way below what a GK should be, strange.

  • Pear peach and some fruit cocktail, not as much on the nose with this bottle as most auslese, not sure about Donnhof, when he first started making wine at these old state vineyards he purchased they were stunning not so much now, though they have come good again in the last ten years.
Second bottle 28/3/2019, not a lot of difference, not a lot coming through a bit flat 24 hrs later still the same a bit flat, not carried away with this vintage yet other '97 Rieslings have been good, 88 for this one, maybe the last bottle will redeem the cru.

  • Pear, honeyed, lemon, spice and floral perfume. Palate has excellent balanced - the sweetness is just lovely and the acidity is more than up to the job of keeping it driven. Showed a little bit more complexity than the last bottle and I think this is in a good place now.
