  • Nahe^3: 10 vintages of Halenberg, Hermannshöhle and Felseneck + X (@Private location, Frankfurt): *** brief note from an extensive tasting ***
    Glass: Gabriel Gold
Tasted blind. Bottle opened about 2-4h before, double decanted before serving.
Darkest color of all wines, a bit golden amber. Driven completely by botrytis in nose and palate. Lots of ripe fruit, honey, spices. A bit fallen apart, lacks depth and tension. Drink now. 90-91

  • Magnum

    Medium yellow, health colour

Very rich fruit, mainly yellow peaches, but good minerality, I dis not found botrytis which others have alluded to on this wine

Quite big for being a Hermansshøhle, very much white sediments in the bottle, so it should have been carefully decanted.

  • Strange bottle. Cork came out solid and looked fine, but there is a white powdery crystalline substance on inner surface of the cork, leaving traces along the bottle as it came out. I assume it must be tartrate, though I've never seen crystals this fine and powdery. The wine itself is fairly golden in color, not obviously oxidized on the nose or palate. Some fine crystals collect at the bottom of the glass, but the wine actually tastes OK, probably typical of the strong botrytis vintage, has some good fruit intensity, decent acidity, probably would have been better several years ago, but about what I would expect from the vineyard and vintage.

Edit: now I see my previous note on another bottle from 2012, should have taken my own advice and drunk this sooner. But a good learning experience.

  • Deep gold w a watery rim - nice honeyed/citrus/mineral nose- palate is the same, but this is quite a bit more advanced than I would have expected, has a real burnished, toasted almond aspect- not really sure what you do with a wine like this, it is not for sipping, but it doesn't seem really food friendly either - it has nice elements, but also seems a tad tired - it says trocken, but it's not dry, so it floats in a bit of a never never land - hard to love. An'06 Pewsey Vale that I had a while ago was vastly more enjoyable for less than half the price. Drink up.

  • Dinner with JonnyG, again: Ripe nose of pineapple, pear, peach and some apricot that could be botrytis. Very weighty on the palate, there is good acid but the boldness is a bit much for me to enjoy this more. Good but probably not up to expectations for me.
