  • Back in the 80s and 90s, I would travel to Burgundy with Bobby Kacher. Robert Jayer-Gilles was Bobby’s mentor on many things, one of which was a heavy use of new wood combined with lower vineyard yields and an extremely cold cellar. Tasting new wines at Jayer-Gilles was always a challenge. The wines were heavily reduced and full of carbon dioxide, making them tough to analyze. They were not a pleasure to taste. Wood could overwhelm the fruit. The 1er crus and GC Echezeaux took years to absorb the oak. The CNV was always a favorite of mine, as long as it was given time to mature. I hadn’t tasted the ‘96 for over 20 years. Decanted about an hour before dinner. Very dark red (still!) with just a hint of bricking on the rim. Still a hint of wood along with some dark fruit aromas initially. Wood notes dissipated within 30 minutes (but returned a couple of hours later after fruit faded). Very impressed by the quality of this 26 year old wine from lesser terroir. Probably just a little past its peak, but nevertheless, at a very good place

  • Viscous looking, slightly cloudy ruby red. Pure sauvage strawberry fruit heavily supported by a toasty wood frame. While the fruit on the nose is pure, ripe and intense, there is a bit more oak than I typically like. That said, the palate is singing. Rich, full with excellent precision for a big mouthful. This is not elegant, but it sure is fun and really quite amazing for its appellation. Excellent to drink over the next few years. (91)

  • Decent balance. Notes of spice. Red fruit. Drink over the next 2-3 years.
