The first few seconds after opening this I turned my nose up like some kind of teenage girl saying p-u. It had a crusty, musty, crampy smell that did not augur well. But not to worry, it all blew off in a matter of minutes, and within a short period it had opened up into an intriguing experience. I guess in some respects the concept of terroir would appear inimical in a cote de nuits villages that could come from most anywhere, but it's the particular genius of well-made burgundy that it expresses itself with more accuracy than any other wine. To wit, it's fascinating to observe the minerality and cut of this wine compared to other vintages and speculate on the impact of the vintage conditions. There's a stony quality to it which is quite entrancing and which provides an overhang on the rest of the impression. It's not great, but it's got this Mount Rushmore kind of dignity about it that's quite unexpected for the pedigree, and a taut intensity on the finish that says don't mess with me (I'm going to confess that I'm writing this note while mostly drunk and it's not even 9:15PM). Not that the fruit is missing, but it's definitely submerged vs. let's say '02 or '05, and in this case it's a Cassidy: ooh, ooh nothing's gonna bring it back...
