Every now and then you come across a wine you thought you would never see, the debut vintage of what would be become Ridge Monte Bello is one of those true, unicorn wines. Medium-bodied, dusty and chalky in the mouth, the wine is loaded with bright, red currants, tobacco leaf, crushed stone, lead pencil and cedar, finishing with crunchy, red fruits. This is a dead ringer for an off-vintage Pauillac.
