The nose is rife with green tea and oak cask. The wine itself is very taught, strong tanning with red currant, green olive and leather. It isn’t terribly inviting nor giving much now. This note was three hours after opening. I have 21 years of MB and actually started as a MB Collector buying direct from Ridge back in 95. This is by far the youngest MB I’ve ever had. I’m not sure 12-15 years isn’t the minimum to let its beauty shine (except for ‘98, it was terrible from the outset). Ridge graciously replaced a corked bottle a few years back with this (the current at the time) vintage so I decided to experiment!
Explodes out of the glass with a deep and vivid nose of violets, pure cassis and purple flowers, with subtle notes of woodsmoke and rich soil, framed deftly by vanillin oak. The palate floats effortlessly, unfolding streamlined - yet perfectly ripe - tannins around waves of persistent blackcurrant and dark raspberry. An earthy finish lingers long. Exceptional. 95+

Exceptional. And we drank a 2006 prior to this one.
