Third and final bottle. Pale gold. Nice, classic aroma: sweetish, musky, lime and lots of mineral. This one is more like the first bottle, a little too sweet and lacking that extra zing of acidity that elevates the best Kabinett. The next day, a bit more balanced, a creamy note has emerged with clementine juiciness. [Natural cork; 9% abv; Wineauctioneer, 3 bottles for £50 plus fees].

Second bottle of three. Only just discovered I had a much more recent vintage of this a year ago - small world! Cork broke. Pale gold. Good smell - sweet, creamy, nice mature notes, a barley sugar character. And the taste is better than the previous bottle, nicer balance and integration between sugar and acidity. Bright and juicy, candied pineapple. This is much more what I'm after in a Kabinett - and it could drink well for another decade or two. The first of three bottles obtained at auction. Cork came out cleanly. Mid lemon colour, on the green side. Marvellous aroma, intense and varietally correct: creamy, lots of lime, minerals, and a hint of "petrol". The taste lacks a bit of zing, lower acidity than expected. On the front end, green grape, nectarine, ample sweetness, finishing with aged character, not quite integrated. Not bad and still good value considering its age, but I can see why previous notes have been equivocal, it's not on the top rung. With a few hours' air, the acidity improved and the balance was much better, a pleasant surprise. [Natural cork; 9% abv; Wineauctioneer, 3 bottles for £50 plus fees].
