2021 FTLOP Harvest Tour; 9/19/2021-10/2/2021 (Portgugal): Unfiltered. Bottled in 1988. This wine was made by Dirk’s father Rolf and was aged for six years in barrel and then bottled. Cinnamon and bright red fruit on the nose. Rich mouthfeel with balanced notes of cherry, Christmas spice and noticeable tannins on the pallet. Long, rich, spicy finish.

Clearly shows some age, but still has a very pretty light red hue to it. Wonderfully smooth and complex on the palate. Not being a Port expert, I made a bit of a fool of myself when I guessed this to be a 1984 Vintage Port (1984 was not a declared vintage for Port), but, with that – ahem – minor detail aside, I guess I wasn’t that far off. One of the most memorable wines of the trip. A real treat.

Niepoort LBV Vertical - Pre 2000 wines: Pretty dark fruit and still has a young touch to it. Good balance but the alcohol is dominating.
