  When a friend from California takes a surprise trip and shows up on your doorstep without warning, and then he tells you he's never tasted Black Tuesday before, then you open up the special vintage! There's been a bit of fading on this, with a little less chocolate fudginess and an overall flattening of the flavor, but it remains uncommonly smooth for its ABV and is holding up surprisingly well even in its decline. More proof that 7 years is the BT sweet spot for me.

  Merry Christmas Eve! It was the undisputed non-variant vintage champ of Blackout Tuesday and, 51 weeks later, it's still killing. The palate is luscious, full of dark chocolate fudge brownie goodness, with sharp bourbon and oak presenting on the swallow. This bottle had a little bit more heat than the one last year did, but the alcohol is just a coda, really, and not at all unwelcome. I'm very pleasantly surprised that this has continued holding up so well, and am very glad I have more!

  Blackout Tuesday! (3/20) — For the third vintage in a row, some bottle variance from previous tastes reared its head. But in this case...WHOA. The 2011 is straight-up brownie batter, fudge and rich, incredibly sweet but somehow not cloying, and with barely any booziness at all. It couldn't have been more different from both '09 and '10, and (spoiler alert!) this ended up being unanimously chosen as the best base (single bourbon barrel-aged) vintage of all! What an amazing brew!
