  • Opened as a toast to Aaron Judge, the new American League home run king! I wasn't as impressed with this vintage as I was hoping when I opened it last year, and it's definitely mellowed a bit since then—but ironically, the mellowing also created some balance, which has been a favorable update. The vanilla has subsided even more, giving way to a bourbon-forward woodiness that isn't nearly as boozy as you might expect. Not the most complex anymore, but a surprisingly easy sipper.

  • After some good luck picking a random vintage a couple weeks ago, I decided to give it another shot—but unfortunately, this pick didn't pay off nearly as handsomely as the 2019 did. The nose is all wood, right down to the still poignant ethanol, and while the finish doesn't end up nearly as boozy as the nose promises, it still falls a bit short. The body is a tad thin, and the vanilla and caramel are nice up front, but it finishes barrel-forward and quite dry. Still good, but not a wower.

  • Drinking well, and tasting well-balanced at room temperature.

  • If it's Tuesday, it's time to work through some of my BT backlog! I didn't realize that I hadn't had a 2018 since New Year's Day of last year, but even though my memory was a little foggy, I was quite impressed. This is a very fudge-forward recipe, with vanilla and heat contributed from the barrel, with a bit more burn as it warms. It's lacking a little bit in complexity compared to the glory years, but drinks with surprising smoothness for its hearty ABV.

  • Blackout Tuesday! (17/20) — Trying to compare with my recent experience with the draft edition, as the palate was reaching strong fatigue at this point. The bottled 2018 was notably hotter than draft, but not by much, allowing the darker, toastier flavors to shine as hoped. There's a good amount of vanilla hanging around as well, but I was missing some of the barrel character I was hoping for. Still got a nice bit of fudge, and of course plenty of roast.
