  • Last of 12, opened 45 minutes, perfect cork and level, more attractive than my last note would suggest and probably the most attractive bottle from case, the nose is plum merlot driven but is now showing some nuance, on palate it is less the fruit bomb of yore and the dusty tannins are better integrated, so the entry is attractive and surprisingly pure, sweetish, dense if not particularly layered, but given the initial impact it is short with flavours that die away quickly on the back palate, after 30 minutes signs of the wine falling apart, drink up and resist the temptation, if any, to re-buy. QG+ (14.5).

  • 11th of 12, perfect fill, opened 40 mins but not decanted - I was put into this by Farr on its release and should have resisted as it represents everything I dislike about Parkerised claret (it was sold following an improbably high Parker score). Always intensely coloured, initially it was a fruit bomb, if a little crude and rustic, the fruit fell away about five years ago leaving not a lot. This bottle was surprisingly attractive on the nose if more redolent of a good Rhone, on the palate it was initially a block of dusty fruit (squashed plums) with some mid palate intensity but no length or purity, after 40 minutes even this disappeared and it became a weighty dusty blob, clearly bettered on night by Chianti La Massa 99 decanted into a half bottle from a week earlier. Life's too short to be bothered with this. At best average (13/20).

Rockss and Fruit

(Chateau Gigault Cuvee Viva) This was mighty oaky in its youth but developed into a nice fleshy wine with lots of chocolatey red fruits and some nice earthiness under there. Very juicy and enjoyable.
