Mugneret Gibourg Clos Vougeot (Medlar (London)): Here we go, that one kicked me in the back saying sit up straight we have a really good wine in the glass, sensational fruit clarity and plenty of mid palate torque and lovely Pinot sweetness. Wonderful. My wine number 3 of the night.

Full bodied, powerful and dense. However, it's tannin that dominates, and I have to assume that if the tannin has not softened after 23 years, it's not going to. On the palate the fruit is mature and strong, with a granular texture. The components are impressive, but harmonious? vg

Monster wine, from magnum, dense, concentrated and sumptuous. The fruit is mature but only just now. Marie-Christine mentioned that the extration of the tannin was a big concern for them when they made this.

Really not very exciting. Rather thin and basic. I was subsequently advised that these are simply very long agers and I pulled too early. I guess we'll see.

(Mugneret-Gibourg Clos Vougeot.) This was some sexy Clos Vougeot. Complex nose of spice, cardamon, clove, dark black fruits, some old oak, sawdust and wet earth. Palate was explosive with great purity and a lovely granular-like texture. Fruit kept pumping hard on the finish and my palate was soaked. This showed lovely elegance and was big but incredibly refined which is hard to do in Clos Vougeot. Bad Clos Vougeot seems gritty and broad. This was classy and refined as it was a good, no, great Clos Vougeot.

Quite a full palate. Reasonable depth of fruit remaining. A slight harshness to the finish. In its decline phase. 89-
