  • Dark red color. Deep, complex nose, half shut but revealing dark red fruits of ripe cranberry, strawberry and spice. On the palate, it has a beautiful mix of medium plus acid and fresh red fruits, again cranberry and strawberry, pomegranate. Just a lovely combination of power and elegance, leaning towards power. Well integrated spice. Medium plus finish puckers the mouth, finishing slightly dry with the tannins showing their power.

Opened two bottles over two nights. My above note is for the first bottle opened in Huntington Beach the night prior to the Chicago event. I thought that 2nd bottle didn't quite show as well.

  • Chicago Burgundy Geek Dinner (Boka - Chicago IL): Not much forthcoming at all on nose. Lots of very good black berry and cherry flavors were the real highlight, but I thought them somewhat obscured by very firm tannins. Like many 1996s this was still firm and backward, but I also found it slightly out-of-balance for now. Others enjoyed this more than I did tonight.

  • I love it when CT says this is a 90 point wine. That way, not many will be seeking this out which means more for the rest of us that know better. I'm not Burg head, or even a Burg lover, but I know a beautiful wine when I see it, and this has it in spades. With another 5-12 years ahead of it, this showed a very pure, compelling mix of dark and red fruits, offered plenty of fresh acids and finished long with tannins that gently caressed the mouth. Some herbal notes, mixed with fresh soil kept this interesting throughout the night. Lovely, structured. Drink thru 2025, 13,5% abv. highly recommended

Aerated to decanter 2 hours, served non-blind.
