  • Very slightly transparent, brooding black-red color with a slightly developed rim of dried blood hue. At first the nose felt completely mute, devoid of any aromas. Then it started exhibiting mainly pungent, oxidative aromas. However, with a few moments of breathing the nose came back to life, exhibiting developed aromas of dried flowers, wizened blackcurrants, some savory hints of prune and hints of pencil shavings. Truth be told, if presented blind, I'd guess this was a older Bordeaux, perhaps from the 80's or 90's. On the palate the wine feels medium-to-full-bodied, quite acid-driven and rather bitter with very dry, crunchy flavors of redcurrant, dried blackcurrant, some developed dark fruit character, a little bit of pencil shavings and a hint of leafy earthiness. The wine is moderately tannic with a little bit of astringent grip, giving the wine good structure. The finish is slightly warm (13,5%) and somewhat grippy with lively flavors of blackcurrants, some leafy vegetal character, a little bit of oxidative dried fruit character and a touch of risin. The tannins feel like they are slowly piling up all over the gums.

A very nice, positively mature Cabernet Franc that has obviously reached its plateau of maturity. The wine will most likely keep for some years, but I see no point in cellaring the wine further - time to drink up. The wine is surprisingly serious and structured with firm, piling-up tannins and I guess the fruit will give up sooner than the structure gets fully resolved. A charming food wine and a great example of Saumur-Champigny. Ridiculous value at only 10,20€.
