  • WOTN for me on a strangely weak night at the auction mtg. Coffee, plum and currant and a smooth finish.

  • Fuller bodied cabernet that does not exhibit any sign of fading in the near term. On the first night the oak seemed to get in the way, but by day 2 the oak seemed more integrated. Nice, but it comes across on the simple, straight forward side. A few in the group are Altamura-addicts, but I guess I've never appreciated them for anything more than a "pleasant" wines that don't seem to develop into anything more than "pleasant".

  • Saturday, September 24, 2005 The change in color and nose that evolves in an older wine as it tries to find its legs after the initial pop of the cork always fascinates me. At first, the wine was bricked, but after an hour it pulled itself together and became an opaque burgundy with ruby on the rim. Scents of cassis, cedar, tobo dominated at first. Later they came fully into focus as additional layers of mint, blackberry, and chocolate developed. The palate mimicked the nose with very deep blackberry and cassis flavors. Chocolate, brown sugar and mint kicked in and carried the finish. A long but somewhat warm finish. This is not a smack in the face Cali Cab, but distinctly not old world. More like a Washington Cab. With thick slabs of grilled ribeyes with mushroom sauce and rosemary smashed potatoes. (beef) A gift from the Welshes in ‘96.
