  Not to everyone's taste, probably - this is smoky, toasty and somewhat rustic at first sniff. But it has enviable typicity and real Crozes identity. An impressively assertive expression of Syrah, with real spice and savoury seriousness. Some exciting brambly fruit in there as well. I like it. I also think it's young, despite being eight years old at this point. I think in another eight it'll lost some of its jagged edges and be super.

  This is a joint note for the Cuvée Louis Belle 2010 and Les Pierrelles 2009. Both have a hearty style, masculine and flavoursome rather than pure and refined, but neither is pedestrian or coarse, with good concentration but eschewing excessive weight (13% ABV) or oak, ripe but not jammy fruit, good freshness and a cool, mineral core. Predictably, Les Pierrelles 2009 has a warmer (but not roasted), spicy and more supple, creamy style, whereas the Louis Belle 2010 is more structured and tannic, fresher and more floral. The 2009 has aromas of bay leaf and liquorice, and in the 2010 the bright skin phenolics are much more to the fore. Length in both wines is good, and they are energetic and have a future. The 2009 is perhaps drinking better now, but the 2010 seems to have more potential. In Burgundy, these would be from Santenay, healthy and robust, solid and firm, but more about muscle than about finesse.
