  • Houston Northern Rhone Blowout: Corked, a bummer as this clearly has great material underneath and plenty of life left

  • They don't make 'em like they used to (New York City, NY): Elegance bottled in syrah form. Perfumed, light, and breathy. It feels as if just breathing on this wine would cause it to float. But don't get me wrong, there's so much stuff going on here. The nose has some green olive notes, as well as some tart red fruits. The palate has lovely acidity; the savage elements of meat and char and blood take a backseat to floral and red-fruit tones. This picked up some heft with an hour of air, and started showing a little bit more of those animale elements, though that was never present in great quantity.

  • Serious bricking - some brown on the edges. Lots of minerals on the nose (granite?), meat and olives. Very sleek. Savory and olives, great sap and meaty on the palate. Very light and pure. Very pure and stony on the finish. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1-1.5/2 = 17-17.5/20.

  • Excessibe Rhone and Riesling night (St. Marks Place Grand Sich, NY): Last of my bottles, but absolutely magnificent. At first there's a vivid green olive and earthy character accented with delicate red fruited and leathery notes, but with more air the fruit deepens and it becomes more meaty and saline. The sense of refinement and finesse on the palate is hard to put into words. I can think of very few wines that have the elegance that this shows on the palate, with an incredible lightness of touch and delicate palate presence despite the intensity of the flavour. There's tremendous length and complexity, a fragrance that keeps building with air, and this bottle was another a wow experience that very much lived up to my expectations.

  • Drinks at La Silhouette (NYC): There's a remarkable sense of elegance, finesse and harmony here. It's incredibly complex with savoury meatiness, saline olive and briny notes, earth and gentle red fruited flavours all coming together on a fragrant, light weight frame, but what's most striking is how refined and polished it seems on the palate. This isn't about power or intensity, but rather a really delicate, understated expression of Syrah that slowly keeps unravelling flavours as the evening goes on. Absolutely stunning.
