  • Informal Tasting of Spanish Wines (Praelum Wine Bistro): Some sense of ripeness in the nose, dominant red fruits but somewhat candied. Bright raisinny flavours, rather light bodied, but intense probably due to ripeness, with a slight alcohol heat, moderate tannins and some fresh acids. A lot of darkish tea leaves with a bit of plums on the finish

  • Very good already, but will get better in 3 to 5 years. A little bit too much heat at the moment, but everything is here to make a great wine: very nice fruit, acidity, backbone. Just needs a little more time.

  • Looks old vine. Very light in colour. Good structure. Fine tannins. Kind of hard to pick as Grenache. Very enjoyable wine.

  • Wait -- I'm the first person on CT to buy a bottle of this? And you guys are going to have to put up with an idiot like me leaving the first tasting note? Oh, jeez, here's where democracy starts to reach its limits.

It's a lovely pale hue, so translucent you might be able to read a newspaper through a full glass. I splashed a little, pnp-style, into a glass and was rewarded with an aroma that reminds me of Ferrand or Janasse, that meaty, heady, hypnotic style of Chateauneuf that I find very appealing. It really doesn't remind me of the Spanish grenache I've had.

I'm awful at dissecting elements of taste, but I'd say that the first sips were pleasantly tart (I find some northern rhones unpleasantly tart at first, for comparison) and the following sweep across the tastebuds again amazingly Janasse-like. (I have had only a few CNPs, so if you've had dozens or hundreds I bet you'll have a better comparison.) The finish is bracing and kind of a thrill.

I was wondering what it would be like on the second day, but alas I have to wait for a second bottle before -- maybe -- finding out. More please.
