Holiday dinner at the French Embassy, Washington D.C. (French Embassy): Served way too cold, and yet it came across very ripe and pleasing. It stayed that way throughout 60 minutes in glass. I did not get obvious 2003 fig notes. I did get sumptuous ripe fruit in a suave delivery. Long finish, this ripe Pinot!

Opened an hour earlier -light/med semi-translucent red -gorgeous expressive aromatics with slight Burg funk, fresh earth, cherry and already starting to pick up some tertiary development -med acidity, real power without weight, ripe but fresh light red cherry fruit, touch of Gevrey spice, med tannins and great length with no finishing heat -shockingly adequate acidity for the vintage, amazing how even Jacky could craft such a balanced and aromatically beautiful wine in 2003, WIN!

A weekend of Jacky Truchot; 1/28/2006-1/29/2006 (Washington DC): Fresh and slightly yeasty nose. Yields to a bit of alcohol and kirschwasser. Gorgeous body, very full and raspberry. A bit of spice and earth, but submerged in the the fruit. Good acids. Very nice, but missing some depth and heart.

What a lovely surprise - a 2003 with cool pristine fruit and pinpoint balance as well as the expected ripeness and forwardness. This does not present itself in as many silky layers as usual, but the thickness of baby fat (a touch more Cali pinot than usual) surely has something to do with that. Remarkably fine and elegant, and the old vine sap still shines.
