  • The color of this wine is a pale red--almost salmon; there seems to be hints of a rose gold tinge running through it when pouring.

Nose of fresh strawberries, raspberries, a touch of cream, green pine needles and a hint of wet dirt. This wine smells like the fog rolling into the coastal California hills from where it hails: refreshing, yet a little earthy and damp.

On the palate, I get hit with tart raspberry and cherry notes. This is followed by some oaky tannin and medium acid, but thins a bit on the midpalate. The estate pinot finishes with a mix of strawberries and earth.

Overall, it feels like this wine might be in an awkward stage and require substantial decanting if opening now.

EDIT: Day 2 - This is the wine I was hoping for. Re-corking half the bottle has brought out the best in this--the tannin and acidity is more integrated, and the midpalate has filled out with notes of cherry and tarragon. Really pretty wine. 92 points.

  • Consistent with previous notes. Acidity settling in nicely. No hurry on these but no real reason to wait. Drink or continue to hold.

  • This showed well for me and it's been some time since I drank any Windy Oaks. The first impression I got from this wine was a cool, cinnamon stick note. Not overpowering but sits there and wafts out enough to catch it. As to the fruit, I found a mix of strawberry and black cherry tones, all accented by what I tried to narrate to my notes as a 'leafy/herbal' component. Medium weight, juicy with good acidity and a light jammy note in the finish, which also reflected some nice grip. This wine impressed me.

  • Still delicious. Popped and poured.

Punching way above it's weight class..... and other pithy metaphors that I can't think of right now.
