  • Boy oh Boy was this a great wine. back in these times Taylors Clare Valley cabs were crackers, long lived and sublime, like a smoother slightly lesser bodied Wendouree. I think they lost the plot some time in the late 80's perhaps after that and the current version of this wine is just not in the class of the old days, in fact they are awful. This 76 Cabernet was amazing. still medium to full bodied, with a lovely brick red colour, its nose was wafting perfumed flowers, gentle mintiness and red currant fruit. the plate was ethereal ( for Timmy) . rich super smooth, filling all cavities in the mouth with ripe Cabernet leafy red fruited tang and long cedary, dark sweet soil truffle aftertaste wrapped in gentle ripe wafting long tannin. I was amazed at how rich and decedent this was and yet how superbly balanced it was and clearly with many years to go for well cellared bottles. I have no hesitation in putting the other 2 i have away for a further 5-10 years. Yummy stuff. would like to see some 76 Bordeaux compete with it. they would struggle. And in fact, here is Yodamarks big claim....
I can only think of 2 other Australian Cabernet Sauvignon's from 1976 that would be better. 76 Moss Wood or 76 Yarra Yering Dry red 1. Happy to hear of other contenders too, but there you go...
