  • Brought to drink at Oinoscent during service, decanted and drank slowly over 1.5 hours
1st try. Heady at first, black fruit, warmth, strong oak presence, whole spice, there is a sour cherry freshness in the back, floral notes too.
Palate with energy, nice tannins, fruit forward, nice acidity, a touch of Brett adding a few extra layers, blue and black fruit, med to long finish, fun to drink.
2nd try, 1 hour later. The wine got super smooth and elegant, no rough corners anymore, fruit forward, lively, beautiful.

  • Did not need to decant. Drinking beautifully from the get go. Absolutely in a great place

  • In great shape now - if you give it 3 hours in the decanter Even then, as you pour it into the glass, it’s very light and soft in colour. But when you take the first taste, it reveals itself. Full, round, and with great depth. Impressive

  • A single-vineyard Tinta Barroca, fruit sourced from a plot planted in 1974 in Malmesbury. Fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, aged for a year in concrete tanks. 13% alcohol, 1,7 g/l residual sugar, 5,5 g/l acidity, pH 3,60 and total SO2 68 mg/l. Total production 3200 bottles. Double-decanted and left to breathe for 4 hours.

Moderately translucent dark cherry color. Brooding and slightly sweet-toned nose with quite complex aromas of ripe raspberries, some balsamic notes of VA, light juicy notes of wizened dark plums, a little bit of meaty character, a bretty hint of farmhouse funk and a touch of blood. The wine is full-bodied, somewhat oily and quite accessible on the palate with slightly sauvage flavors of dark plummy fruit, some bretty funk, a little bit of balsamic VA, light jammy notes of sweet blackberries, animale hints of gamey meat and leather and a touch of nail polish. The acidity feels moderately high and the medium-plus tannins bring some welcome firmness and grip to the mouthfeel. The finish is ripe, juicy and subtly funky with a little bit of tannic grip and slightly evolved flavors of sweet dark fruits, some balsamic VA, a little bit of leathery funk, light gamey notes of meat, a hint of blackberry jam and a touch of wizened black cherry.

Tasting this alongside Treinspoor 2016, it felt like these wines were cut from the same cloth - only this showed a bit more age, depth and complexity. However, the differences were not remarkable and both the wines came across as accessible, ripe and subtly sauvage in character with a balanced overall feel, but perhaps at the same time feeling a bit straightforward and linear for Sadie wines. These Treinspoor wines seem to be good, old world-ish red wines, but nothing exceptional or particularly memorable in the Sadie range. Priced somewhat according to its quality at 26,50€.

  • Medium violet/ purple color with moderate clearing at rim. Medium(+) aromas of fresh raspberry/ blueberry/ cherry - crunchy fruit similar to Beaujolais - beautiful and enticing. Medium bodied palate of red/ blue fruit with medium(+) acidity and medium tannins which are well integrated. Nice underlying minerality. This is well made wine, subdued but at the same time very energetic, and made for food.
