  We didn't expect much at all from this wine, figuring we'd held it too long, and ended up being pleasantly surprised. There was some mustiness at first, and a bit of astringency, but that quickly gave way to a very nice claret, with very sweet fruit and some good body, a bit past its prime, certainly, but still quite enjoyable. The really surprising thing was how much fruit there still was. JR tells me it was a real fruit bomb in its youth, so I guess makes sense. This is the time in its evolution when the lack of balance is a plus! I wish we'd opened it alongside a nice piece of red meat, on the leaner side. It's such a pleasure to drink fully mature wine that, for me, a little faded is just fine.
