  • Much better than previous bottle. Nice bouquet, fruit and balance and velvet finish.

  • Who is Olivier Daubresse, and why does he get top billing on the front label of this bottle? He's not the winemaker, so how should we be reacting to his imprimatur? Assurance of a canonically correct Corton? Promise of pinot purity? Next best thing to a blini and a bong?

I have been told that in some circumstances you never ask a question you don't already know the answer to, and this is one of them. He's a very talented importer (attested by extremely qualified acquaintances), who verifiably possesses the kind of blind tasting ability allegedly claimed by Parker, and Burgundy is his specialty. So that added spice to the bottle in front of me (as opposed to...) and heightened my anticipation.

Alas, I'm not in love with this. Do not confuse me with an authority on Corton Renardes. The nose was initially thrilling, spiking with ripe pinot fruit and intriguing sous-bois notes, minerally inflected on the side. But in the mouth it was closed, dense, and ungenerous, and I took for me what is the highly unusual step of decanting a theoretically mature Burgundy. I then drank it over the next two hours, hoping for something grander to emerge. To its credit, it kept getting better, an initially somewhat fierce rusticity subsiding in favor of more balance and interesting secondary characteristics. After two hours, it was primarily secondary (?), earth, mushrooms, leather with faint menthol notes. I could not conclude it was of grand cru quality, especially in what I would have regarded to be a favorable vintage. Here, for me, it's not a case of Daubresse Oblige.

  • A bit tannic upon opening. Tannins softened after about 45 minutes in glass. Decent fruit, but not worth the price in my opinion.

  • Great nose -- very earthy, with some.....bacon. The bacon thing (who doesn't love bacon?!?) also comes through on the palate, but unfortunately so does the stewed fruit thing. Along with some heat. Maybe better after about 2015.

  • Beautiful Burgundies of Domaine Maillard Pere & Fils with Winemaker Pascal Maillard & Importer Olivier Daubresse (Chain Bridge Cellars, McLean, VA): You know that blast of awesomeness that fills your nose when you open the oven to check on a perfectly seasoned pork roast? That's the nose of this wine. The palate is smoky and elegantly earthy - a pretty, delicate wine that seems like it will still go for 10 more years easy. A real winner.
