  • Yes this is a super sherry but I’m not blown away by it like other tasters, classic Palo Cortado nose, nutty, pungent, some rounded fruit on the first couple of days. To taste, dry, intense, lingering. Beautifully integrated oak, balanced acidity, a touch austere, nutty, complex and long. Some rancio. The intensity rather than the flavour is the most impressive thing about this sherry. Held up well for a week in the decanter.

  • great nose - cobnuts, caramel - amazing. just jumps out of glass
in the mouth there's butterscotch and then bracing acidity
hazlenuts and then a moment when those nuts hit a flame and they're toasted, you can taste the change from raw to cooked. It's quite uncanny
So evocative. A wine that stops you in your tracks
    very very long
My wine of the year so far. £200 a bottle and worth every penny

  • Open and lifted nose with cream toffee, butter and mushrooms. Slightly medicinal touch, gluey lift and leather. Some appley to citrusy fruit, but playing the second violin here.
Dy and medium bodied palate with round fruit, some lift and lively acidity. Alcohol is evident, but not disturbingly. Maccadamia, hazelnuts, rubber and cloves. Leathery grip in the aftertaste.
A very refined Sherry with beautiful weightlessness delivering fine complexity.

  • I bought this wine from the Gonzalez Byass Bodega and drank it at Platon's house in Syros
together with his wife Nana and friend Lizzie. We had it for lunch together with boiled eggs rinsed with
olive oil, salt and black pepper, cucumbers and other little mezedes.
One of the most memorable wine experiences I' ve ever had. This wine was so profound and transcended
me to another age - although it is not a hundred years old like some madeiras.
    No formal notes taken.

(González Byass Sherry Palo Cortado Añada) Often referred to as “Sherry lovers’ Sherry,” Palo Cortado falls somewhere between Amontillado and Oloroso in character and represents less than 1% of all Sherry production. This one is rarer still—an unblended vintage bottling from a single cask that, amid rumors that the category may be phased out by the Consejo Regulador, may soon become a museum piece. It was my top scorer in the recent competition at Vinoble 2010, with a life in the mouth that few wines can match. Although it’s dry, the concentration of flavors creates a suppleness mimicking sweetness, and it boasts an array of earthy, exotic aromas and a finish lasting nearly an hour. Hot Picks
