    Pasta Plus Restaurant in Laurel

My first try at ordering off of their essentially 'hidden' reserve wine menu.

This is my first experience with an aged Brunello and of course I had no idea about vintages. I recognized the producer's name and I figured what the hell.

While I think this wine was over the hill, it was still clearly interesting from a palate calibration point of view. I think the term is 'bricking' -- this wine had much evidence of this. A funked up nose of charred meats and must blew off to reveal a more cognac-y vibe. Eventually this transmogrified in to a decent enough wine with an OK amount of fruit left. Tannins were still evident and it tasted of sour cherries and plum, with charred pork loin and mint making appearances. I even, near the end, got a sense of potato chips on the nose.

All in all an interesting experience. It sure strikes the point home that you should know at least a general sense about vintages before you blindly order an aged wine off the list. I didn't think it was horrible, and I think Mrs. TJ and our friends we were dining with seemed to enjoy it well enough, but I think they all might have been just polite about the whole thing.

I am guessing here, as this is my first aged Brunello, but I'll give it 82 points.
