  • In an interesting experiment, I had a half dozen of these wines cork finished in 375 format, and one 750 bottle that was a screw cap. Only two of the 6 375's were really good, and all but one showed quite a bit of age. This 750, though, was unbelievably fresh. No way would I have guessed it to be 6 years old. For all that richness, there's a brightness to this wine that really lets it shine. No rush at all to pop these if you have them in 750. Doesn't fall into any of the pitfalls of the grape. The acidity is there, bright fruit, rich without being top heavy. I'm really happy I got the chance to try this wine as it was meant to taste.

  • 9/2/09: Tried a few bottles in 375, with huge variation. Most a touch oxidized. This bottle was absolutely beautiful, and really showed how well a job Calera does with the varietal. Clean and pure, with bright fruits and just scintillating. 92

4/29/09: I've been wanting to try Calera's Viognier for years now, so imagine my surprise when perusing a discount liquor store and seeing this in 375's for less then $5 a bottle. Wasn't sure of the provenence, but couldn't help it, I bought the half dozen bottles sitting on the shelf. 1st bottle: Cork was in great shape. Pours a light golden color. Showing some signs of age, but the fruit is still prominant. There's hints of oxidation in the background, but this is not only still drinkable, but quite enjoyable. Pretty big wine, with close to a full bodied attack. In fact, this is bigger then most of the Chard's I've tried from them. More melony then peaches for fruits. Actually reminds me more of a Condrieu then it does a California Viognier. Rich, without being fat. Shows a touch of heat. Again, maybe not as good as it would have been a year or two ago, but quite nice, and this was a 375 that was unlikely to have been stored in the best of conditions. A very interesting experience, and the wine does grow on you throughout the glass. 90

  • Pretty tropical fruit and, as Jennifer put it, something that reminds her of springtime. Nice medium bodied mouthfeel, still with a bit of acidity. Fruit ranges from tropical to citrus with a hint of beeswax and some nice minerailty. This is a really well built Viognier with a great deal of complexity.
