  • Wine Dojo - Week 12 - Brave New World (Rick's Place): Tasted Blind

    A: Medium lemon
    N: Pronounced intensity. Youthful.
Primary flavors of apple, lemon, CHAMOMILE, apricot.
P: Dry, medium (+) acid, perceived alcohol to be medium (+) but was a whopping 14.5% and so high, medium (+) body, intensity and finish.
C: BLIC? good balance, length and intensity. I think this a a very good quality wine and can drink now but has the acid to keep it fresh as it continues to mature in your cellar. $20/bottle

GUESSES: Thought this was a warm/hot climate wine from South Australia. I guessed the grape was Chardonnay.

MISTAKES: I have little to no experience with 100% Semillon wines. I didn't spot beeswax or lemon curd....despite baking cakes with this stuff, i don't know that i have ever identified lemon curd aromas in wine.

This style of Semillon from South Australia is similar to that of California and is identified by Papaya, apple and lemon curd flavors. The style from Hunter Valley in Western Australia as VERY different.

  • It’s my Birthday, and after a hard day of work, my simple pleasure gift is Torbreck... Semillion!

Lovely acidity with lemon curd, golden apple, golden rasin, tart Asian pear, with a touch of orange flesh melon on the finish. Like a beautiful lady in Couture, this is elegant , softly rich and satisfying. The 14.5 alc is a surprise but the mouth feel is solid with a bit of glycerin. I’ve always been confused which glass shape to use with this varietal, testing favored the burgundy German glass for richer fruit quality. As
I celebrate another year of good purchases - like tonight, I am giving 6 to 12 months more to try again. An amazing versatile food wine ... one of the best.

  • Drank this at Torbreck tasting dinner.
When i first tasted it i thought it was a relatively high acid chardonnay with neutral oak or something. Was shocked to hear that it was semillon. This is a polar opposite style of Hunter Valley semillon which can be lean, green, austere. This is rich, viscous, generous, with a good amount of acid. Almost reminds you of a white bordeaux style of wine. Very interesting wine and took me by suprise since I was not expecting this expression of Semillon out of Australia. You can drink now but I think it may be interesting to try this 3 years later. It has the acid to hold for several years.

  • Mid-gold; nice touch of golden richness on the nose. Ripe apple. Golden Apple skin. Notes of beeswax, lemon curd; good richness on the creamy palate too. Not heavy and has good acidity. Oak spice on the finish. A refreshing Semillon style.

  • 2017 New York Wine Experience Trip; 10/16/2017-10/25/2017 (New York City, NY): Partially barrel fermented in neutral oak, this straw-colored wine (100% Sémillon) delivers fresh lemon, white peach, flint and chervil in a light-bodied, seamlessly alcoholic frame. There is a wisp of oak on the mid-palate that leads to a medium-length, crisp finish. Enjoy this refreshing white with light fare or on its own. Drink now-2019.
