On opening, the nose showed prunes and stewed fruits in abundance. The palate was very rich and plummy and quite tannic for a Hunter shiraz. The vintage was certainly a big one in the Hunter and despite the accolades it has received, I have found a number of the wines to be extractive and over ripe. While it improved on the second night and became more approachable, it is not your typical medium bodied Hunter shiraz which the region produces so well. Whatever, there was plenty of fruit to savour!

Enjoyed the night after the same vintage of Mountain A. This is darker, blacker, redder, denser in colour, and more red/black fruits, with olives tapenade, soil and liquorice notes, so probably Old Hill material? Similar palate, more rustic and without the style and glossy Shiraz fruit of Mountain A. Denser than but probably not worth the premium over OP & OH, but yet another fabulous MP 2014. Keep and try again 2028, 18.

Whistestop Hunter tour (Hunter Valley): Medium minus intensity aromas but quite brooding and dense with slightly porty notes, plums and prunes touch of herbaceousness, cream and cedar. Big, chewy, dark hued fruit then a fair whack of peppery spice. Tannins are chalky but fruit persists. Hmm

A classic savoury Hunter Shiraz, that’s full throttle now, that will hopefully blossom in 10+yrs time.
The assault on the senses begins on the nose with blackberry, red currants, baking soda (verging on neat spirit), creamy cedar notes, and hints of clove and cinnamon. Searing acidity and fruit ripeness reveal a very dry, but smooth, full bodied Red. Luscious from the mid palate, there’s a nice, slightly sweet, slightly spritzy, blackberry and black cherry finish, with a dash of liquorice, clove, cinnamon and spice revealing that classic Hunter Valley savoury earthiness.
It’s quite multifaceted. If a little brutish for my liking. I can see why it was described as clunky in the delivery by Gary Walsh at The Wine Front. Here’s hoping 10 years bottle time will right things. Drink 2024-2029. A Wozza 91.5/100 (3.5/5.0) from me.

Six Nations 2016: Cherry, raspberry, earthy and spice. Medium-fuller bodied, good length balance and composure. Doesn't really put a foot wrong. Good potential to develop as well.
