Dark purple, totally opaque apart from a thin clear rim. A huge burst of medicinal menthol on the nose, followed by blackcurrant - juice and leaves. The mint faded over a couple of hours, though it's still there, threading through the fruit. On the palate it's ripe but savoury, with lots of fine to medium tannins, and a good lick of acidity. The alcohol is apparent on the finish when drunk alone, but not with this lovely roast chicken. Very good length. With time, a slightly surprising aroma of decaying undergrowth appears - it's subtle but it's there. I wouldn't have expected that in an eight-year-old Cabernet of this quality. (18 maybe, but not eight.) Not a problem right now, but it does make we think this doesn't have a long future.14.5%, screwcap.
Rich, opaque dark purple. A surprisingly muted nose, though threads of intense blackcurrant/cassis aroma are just discernible. On the palate, lusciously ripe, sweet, smooth - but of course with considerable fine tannin in the long, plush finish. Mentor is a great Australian wine, but I don't feel this is at its peak yet. 14.5%, screwcap.
