  • It’s quite young but surprisingly open after about an hour. Really juicy, starts red fruited and leans a little darker after the air. Wonderfully balanced and earthy, wild. Was more integrated two days later stored in a 375. Lots of upside here.

  • Tasting Ground official tasting, Rhone wine pairing (Jerar restaurant): 1/3ha plot in La Landonne
The wine is very elegant next to Amethyste, the fruit is rounder, floral notes, firm spice frame, peppery
Palate very fresh, juicy, tight tannins, red fruits, cherry notes, iron rich palate, furm tannins but not angular, medium to full body, medium finish
Even the color is lighter next to Amethyste, but it was also an absolute joy to drink

  • Pretty disappointing for me … not bad, but not as outstanding as I hoped for.

  • First and foremost, while the Les Journaries is often marketed as the "more accessible" and "easier to understand" Cote-Rotie of Bernard Levet, it still deserves serious attention. For instance, checking in on the 2015 within an hour of opening the bottle, doesn't even begin to do this wine justice. In fact, it was closer to two hours that the classic black fruit, smoke, garrigue and bacon fat really started to evolve. This is silky and enveloping at first sip, but beneath it all is a stoney, mineral and acid-driven core that's nearly masked by the ripe plum and black currant fruits that were imparted by the warm vintage. It lingers on the palate with gritty tannins and a concentration of pips and skin matter--like when you dig too deeply into those red table grapes with their bulbous seeds, while leaving a bitter twang that pinches at the cheeks. This is far from simple, entry-level or easily accessible, and while it will mature sooner than the bigger wines of the portfolio, it remains one of the best values in Northern Rhone wine.

  • Ordered a bottle for dinner at Jean-Georges (NYC), to go with the latter dishes of the 10-course tasting menu (Foie Gras, followed by Duck). Opened at the start of the meal and served towards the end, so it had over 2 hours to breathe in the bottle (no decant).

Lovely, old-school nose, with herbs and spices, smoked meat, leather, plum and a hint of garrigue.

In the mouth - Well rounded, medium bodied, good ripeness. The fruit is approachable and juicy. Very tasty, but without any great complexity. Good structure and decently long finish. Will hold up well for another 5 years, but I don't expect this to improve much at this point.

Overall, a strong performance for what is ultimately an entry-level Cote Rotie. It doesn't hang with the big boys, but the nose is impressive and while the mouth doesn't take-off, it's still a very solid, well structured and ultimately tasty wine. 90 points in my book.
