From half bottle at 701West at NY Times Square Edition. A winery and wine I‘ve never heard of, more a supermarket wine at roughly 20 bucks. Then there‘s the fact that 1981 wasn‘t a good vintage in Napa Valley. So what sane person would think that this could be a remotly decent wine? But it was, and more so, it was excellent! Of course, probably not the most complex or long wine, but just a wonderfully mature Bordeaux blend with the full teritary aromatics, still enough fruit and importantly tension. A nice surprise! Kudos to the sommelier at 701West. That‘s not the only gem she put on the list. You have a wonderful selection of aged wines with an excellent QPR like an extensive selection of old Riojas (and of course all the necessary big names too).
TN: Full throttle tobacco, wet forest floor, mushroom broth, lots of hay, black truffles and still a nice core of dark cassis. Medium+ intensity, medium- length, medium+ precision. Very nice structure with still elevated tension and freshness and completely melted tannins. Almost a Pinot-esque softness.
Decanting: Not decanted, no decant needed.

Purchased at the vineyard (a case) in 1987? on a deal ($3/bottle?). It was great then....and kept one to try someday...Wonderful. The wine opened up quick and drank well. Very nice Cab. Full bodied. Went fast!

Seemed funky when first opened, but showed stinking corkiness after being open a bit. Too bad. Color was nice, fill level was great.
