  • The 2016 Domaine Grand Veneur Côtes du Rhône Les Champauvins is a delightful red blend that paints a vivid picture of the Southern Rhône. Pouring a deep garnet, it offers a pleasing mix of dark berries, black cherry, and a subtle hint of spice on the nose. There's a touch of local terroir in the form of garrigue, adding a nice regional nuance.

On the palate, the wine unfolds with blackberry and plum flavors, complemented by velvety tannins and a balanced touch of oak. A hint of savory herbs adds complexity to the overall taste. The finish is warm and enduring, leaving a lasting impression.

This Les Champauvins is approachable now but also has the potential to age gracefully for 3-5 more years. It's a versatile choice, offering both immediate enjoyment and the promise of evolving complexity with a bit of patience. Cheers to Domaine Grand Veneur for crafting a well-balanced and expressive Côtes du Rhône.

  • Good, but will improve with another year of cellaring.

  • Drinking very nicely, classic southern rhone flavors.

  • It feels like this has improved over time, now showing well. Quite balanced with more richness and expression than I expect from the price. Such a good bargain at the $20 or so plus tax I paid four years ago.

  • Nose is petroly-funky on the open, blows off pretty quick to reveal deep raspberry and cooked strawberry notes, light leather and rose and opens up into some light notes of grilled meat and hair dye (mom was a hair stylist, this one hit deep in the memory bank). I did not check thinking there is a decent Syrah presence here though, coming through the Grenache quite nicely. Appearance is clear, medium concentration, dark ruby color. 15% alcohol but does not do much coating or legging on the glass. Palate is fairly straight forward reflecting the nose with cooked strawberry, raspberry, a light menthol/tree bark note, and peach skin. Slightly lacking in earthy savory notes, but acidity is efficient and balanced, tannin is very fine and resolved and integrated. Has a smooth texture and medium finish that is nice and ever so slightly peppery to finish. Another great value find. I think the CT community score of 90 with dozens of reviews is spot on.
