  • Classical Raveneau, classical Foret. Just a touch of extra generosity (even opulence) from the terroir, inimitable and immediately recognisable Raveneau style. Acidity, salt, creamy lemon, chalk, flowers, warmth from older wood, intense but elegant, impeccable balance, gentle bitters, touch of liquorice, excellent length. Marvellous. In the bistro at Hotel Olivier Leflaive, Puligny-Montrachet, France.

  • I thought I’d open a bottle of the 2017 Raveneau Forêts to compare with the recent 2017 Dauvissat from the same vineyard. This is the better wine - no doubt - but the much more primary and unevolved expression. Relatively pale gold. Fragrances of honeysuckle and other white flowers, poached pears, dried coriander, baking spices, typical Raveneau beeswax and a touch of spicy oak. Phenolic, grippy and concentrated with a large volume of ripe fruit. Apricot, blanched almond, grapefruit and oyster shell. More persistent, refreshing acidity than suggested by the nose. Dense with serious mid palate weight. Finishes relatively long and dry on apricot kernel bitterness. As noted, still quite tight and closed. Ideally hold until 2024 - 2025+ (93-94).
