≈50 min decant into a plastic, cylindrical pitcher which was then capped; Threw considerable sediment; Private Preserve after Day 1

N: Cherries (blk) & blk rasps with notes of spice & poss orange rind (though one relative categorically disagreed) with subsequent pours showing some choc?

P: Med, poss MF, body; RNDISH entry with still NICE, ALMOST swtish frt met by a bit of astringent pucker which, after BRIEFLY building, evolves into a very LONG, TANGY/swt (60:40), ULT quite pleasant finish to the SCANT, VERY innocuous, yet still firming, very, VERY fine tannins. Paired nicely with the night's Grilled Pk Chops & Scalloped Potatoes, the wine's tanginess serving to cleanse the palate while its init swtness avoided a direct confrontation. My EXC-/EXC, trending towards the higher IF one can pair it with something compatible such as tonight's entrée. Nonetheless, IF I had another bottle I'd try to consume it during the next 20-24 mos (just to be on the safe side) as there are some subtle indications it's not what it was on 12/29/19. (E.g., obvious rim browning, & poss a TOUCH of heat revealed by diminishing frt?) // Day 2: Held acceptably, but as the reinserted cork crumbled (a RARITY for me), & the cork had seemed a bit loose on Day 1, perhaps this bottle had been under > duress than most? [As of late Apr '20, wine-searcher shows no sources for this vintage].

    Note: Also tasted on 6/8 & 12/29/19

  • Uncorked ≈2 hrs prior to tasting; Private Preserve after Day 1

Cf. the CellarTracker Article link [lower lft] to get specific info for this vintage, including acclaim.

N: An attractive melding of leather, orange peel, wild straws, & poss toast, notes of flowers with addt'l air/swirling

P: Med body; NICE, ALMOST swtish frt met by an astringent pucker which stays within hailing distance of the init frt as it fairly seamlesly evolves into a LONG, balanced finish with with a VERY slight spiciness & a tangy/swtness (& OCCASIONAL glimpses of a very, VERY slight bitterness) to the firming, but ULT unoffensive, very, VERY fine tannins. // Day 2: NO significant decline, though I *did* notice LOTS of sediment, implying that I *should* have decanted it, IF only briefly. :( ∑: My EXC/EXC+, arguably the higher if only because the relatives (who generally have no interest in "aged" wines) were not only PLEASED, but *totally* surprised @ the age of this! ;) [As of late Mar '20, wine-searcher shows no sources for this vintage].

    Note: 1st tasted on 6/8/19

  • Winebar [4 Whites, 8 Reds, & 4 *shared* bottles] from 06/07/19] (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): W-O-W , Dr. Tom! This one "spoke" to ME as well! ;)

Info from back label: "Harvested 4/28-5/3/04; Hand-picked & 100% destemmed; Cold-maceration & fermentation in s/s vats, & left on 'skins' for 3 wks. Aged in 75% new & 25% used FR oak barriques for 16 mos. 387 cases bottled 11/14/05." Grown, produced, & bottled by Schubert Wines Ltd.

    N: RIPE blkberries; Intensity lurking

P: MF body; RNDISH entry with very NICE, ALMOST swtish frt met by astringent pucker which, without even remotely losing contact with the initial frt, SEAMLESSLY evolves into a VERY LONG, BALANCED finish with a tangy/swtness to the very, VERY fine tannins. Drinking IMPECCABLY, & should hold for _ yrs more? 14.5% ABV; My Exceptional-/Exceptional (96-100/100 on the 100 pt scale)! 91 pts WE (Czerwinski, 12/1/07) @ $50, and 89 WS (4/30/07). [This vendor may still have several left @ $44.95!]

Note: This had probably been open for at least 90 mins when it was poured for me, the notes above being written shortly thereafter. Upon revisiting it had lost significant body but showed NO signs of oxidation -- & that was after ≈4 addt'l hrs in a small tasting glass!

  • mature, but still fresh and vibrant, this has kept much better than i was expecting, a delicious treat. there was still some dark cherry fruit that blended with a little leather and earthiness, the finish wasn't over long, but thats being picky
