Stephen Pannell makes several other varietals that aren’t as common in Australia like Touriga and Barbera, but he’s most famous for his Nebbiolo, which he learned how to make from his time working with GD Vajra in Piedmont and recruiting help from his friends in Piedmont to consult for him in Australia.
Biodynamic. Aged 14 months in old Hungarian oak and large vats. Some oak notes at first with some coffee and tobacco. It’s fuller and more tannic than the Sandrone or Clendenen, but stays elegant. Darker than the Sandrone, but like the Clendenen it became more red-fruited over time and gained lots of floral notes. Baking spices. It became more aromatic in general. It has the elegance and feeling of lightness with power and structure I like in Barolos, but it still needs time. 92+

First Wednesday Wine Club (Napoli in Bocca, Haberfield): Served blind. Red currant and black fruits, sweet spcie, a little pyrazine, dried orange peel, cedar, leather and earth on the nose. In the mouth it's got juicy acidity and medium plus intensity chalky textured tannins, muted black fruits, leather and slight alcohol warmth. I guessed Coonawarra Cabernet early noughties (hangs head in shame)

GT Wine April May 2020 - Nebbiolo (Winespace, Surry Hills): Medium minus intensity aromas show a little wood glue, floral with a rose petal top note, slight savoury spice and plums. Initially soft and fleshy mouthfeel then chalky tannins that dries out the palate with the fruit very much playing second fiddle. hmm.

Beautiful wine. Ripe fruit but savoury all the same. Delicious cherries, a fine but very solid and persistent tannin structure and a lovely overlay of vanilla pod. Plush enough but with plenty of earthiness. Mouthfilling and with a long finish. He’s really nailed the tannins here.

2 weeks in Australia with a stopover in Singapore; 6/14/2019-7/1/2019 (Singapore, Sydney, Adelaide, McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Adelaide Hills): Tasted at the winery. Light ruby color - more translucent. Dusty tannins, red fruited, with spice and florals. Very pretty and pleasant to sip.
