13% alcohol. Superb long dense cork with no wine penetration whatever, quite a feat at age 17. Decanted an hour ahead. Dark but not impenetrable colour; a fair bit of deposit in spite of the decant. Harmonious evolved nose with wild berries and forrest floor; no oak initially, but this emerges over time, not in an overly intrusive way. Very vivid in the mouth with good depth and mellowness combined with grip. More oak than ideal. I am wondering (not for the first time) if I do not prefer Syrah in its youthful exuberant glory.

Vibrant nose. Bordeaux-like cassis, red cherry, wild strawberry and graphite - but with a grilled meat element that can only be northern Rhône. Mineral, almost bloody palate with a tarry black cherry and unripe plum fruit - a little closed and tannic. Very long slate and smoke finish. Tertiary bell pepper elements. I liked this but the palate was duller than I'd expected for such a lauded wine. Possibly in a dumb phase?

Another bottle, opened on the spur of the moment. Pristine condition, not decanted. It comfirms the impression from last October that the fruit is re-emerging after a long hibernation, and this development seems to be going quite quickly right now. The tannic structure is formidable and needs even more time to resolve, but I feel that the (richness of the) fruit will not run out before they do. If all goes well, this could develop into a beautifully meaty and spicy wine in 3-5 years’ time, with ample upside after that. Next bottle in 2023.

XA’s note from last year seems to apply this bottle. This seemed a rougher, more generic Syrah than the bottles opened 5 years ago. Quite good but hard to recognize as Cote Rotie, at least to my taste buds

Pristine bottle, perfect level and cork. Twice decanted. Deep and rich, cedary and dusty, very firm and tannic and stuctured, but the fruit seems to be re-emerging, accompanied by mature, nutty, forest floor notes and a hint of bacon. This still needs more time for the sticky tannins to resolve, and the jury is still out whether this will ever be as spectacular in maturity as at was in youth.
