  • The wine shows freshness, white pepper, citrus notes, tight and a bit closed
In the palate, the wine explodes with flavor, citrus, grapefruit, pear notes, white pepper again, tight and austere, medium acidity, a touch mineral, medium finish.
Fine and elegant but still really young

  • I tasted this side by side with the Bodenstein. The wines are quite similar but I would put the Bodenstein ahead by a hair. The Achleiten is a pale straw, and has a similarly floral nose, and honestly isn’t distinguishable (for me) without actually tasting it. You again find hints of lime, guava, and passion fruit on the nose, quite crisp and not at all exotic. The wines both have significant tangy acidity, but behind it both have a somewhat extracted, richer fruit. And it is here that I find the Achleiten a tad bitter, a bit harsh, and I pick up a slightly malty note. Quite a good wine, but given that the price is the same, I would go with the Bodenstein.

  • Slightly hazy appearance, yellow-green colour. Smells very powdery and flinty, has the mineral signature of Achleiten somewhat, but it's a little indistinct. Theres a little layer of white stonefruit and citrus below the smoky thing. The palate is a little shrill, higher acidity than I expected for sure. Not as much fruit weight and texture as I would usually expect from Smaragd Gruner.

Overall, not really together as a wine at this stage. Thought it might have been drinking better by now but it looks sort of incomplete. 18 was a difficult vintage and this was picked quite early for Smaragd.
But I probably drank this too young. The Bodensteins told me the sweet spot for this sort of Gruner is generally 2-7/8 years from vintage.

It's also possible that this bottle was slightly heat-affected; The cork was beginning to push out of the bottle (like 1-2mm) when it arrived. That would explain the slight hazy appearance actually.
