  • A survey of Domaine Huet (Chicago, IL): Cursive label. This wine may be responsible for one of the best pairings I've ever had. A braised and then grilled piece of coppa was served alongside this, and the balance between the pork fat and the sweetness and acidity in this wine was perfect. Intense botrytis notes, but the age mellows it out a lot. There's more peach than marmalade, but still some intense spice notes that really speak to the botrytis. Still some sweetness, but obviously nowhere as intense as the myriad 1989 1ère tries we had tonight. With air, more of the classic wooly chenin notes start to emerge. This would be a wine more drinkable by the glass than the 1989s, where a little just goes so far.

  • This had one of the most disgusting corks I had ever seen -- there had been a slight bit of seepage and a layer of gelatinous black mold that smelled like mildew had made a very comfortable home there. A few more years and it probably would have tried to kill Tasha Yar. Fortunately the cork itself was sound enough and despite dropping into the bottle when Anyway, the colour of this is burnished and golden; plenty of botrytis in the form of spice, marmalade, and apricots, but this has an intense chenin character as well, showing mushrooms from the age and a significant amount of wooly funk. The palate seems sweet and probably was properly so a few decades ago, but the sweetness has since retreated. The botrytis on this is reminiscent of a semi-dry version of the Yquem grand vin, but with the wooly chenin character emerging prominently on the palate. On the other hand, I can't help but think the rot is slightly dirty given the intense mushroom notes here. Nonetheless, amply delicious and another in a long line of wines testament to the incredible ageability of Huet.

  • Almost shockingly dry for a 1er Trie Moelleux, but that's more a testament to the effects of time and good winemaking than anything else. Lovely nose of wax, lanolin, hazelnut, and ripe pear. Only a faint honeyed sweetness on the palate, balanced nicely by the powerful (but not overbearing) acidity and lingering, mineral-laced finish. Just love these old treasures.

  • A nice bottle of 69. Good fruit of quince, some elderberry, pear. The sweetness has become more subtle and plays well with the acidity.
