HDH auction at avec River North (Chicago, IL): Dirty and old. Classic old Gruaud notes; a bit funky and very unclean. Drying out and clearly long in the tooth. More interesting than good.

Well, this was a surprise! I was expecting it to be completely undrinkable, especially since 1967 was not a very good or supposedly long-lived year. There was quite a lot of ullage, and I knew that the bottle had not been well stored in its early years. So I feared the worst.
Instead, it was really quite pleasant. The colour was still quite good (deeper than the ‘73 tasted alongside it), brown at the edges but red at the centre. Agreeable old-claret nose, without any unpleasant funkiness, although there was a little volatility to it. On the palate it was tired but not excessively so, still showing some fruit. A little astringent on the finish, I think from the streak of acidity characteristic of the year – but that is probably what kept it fresh. Even the next day it was still drinkable.
Tasted at the Winos’ Gruaud-Larose dinner, vintages 2002, 2000, 1999, 1996, 1990, 1986, 1982, 1975, 1973, 1967, 1961 (see reviews for the other vintages)

All the 67's opened together and 30 minutes ahead and lasted for 3+ hrs.
Trotanoy (1 bottle; 93 pts) - best showing and liked by all, with most structure and complexity; earthy and a hint of mint Palmer (DQ) - oxidized L'Evangile (2 bottles; 90-91 pts) - lighter version the Trotanoy Gruaud Larose (1 magnum) (91 pts) - like it better than the L'Evangile as it was more complex Cheval Blanc (4 bottles) (91-94 pts) - likely bottle variations even though all is top shoulder; one of the 4 showing great complexity, while the other ones were lighter version Vieux Chateau Certan (3 magnums) (91-92 pts) - all is bottom neck; better than the L'Evangile and can be as good as the Cheval Blanc

You have to slow down for wines like this. Opened next to a 66 Montrose, which was completely dead and maderized, and at first glance this seemed the same. But stopping and taking this in, it was alive, leathery, with a Phaedrus of fruit in its core. Quite pleasant for a couple of hours and then packed it in. Not drying. This was never great, I would guess, but what a pleasure.
