  • This doesn't quite hit the mark for me. I want more lime from the white wines in this region.

This wine has plenty of salinity and citrus peel, but a heavier mouthfeel than I would prefer. No effervescence, which I also look for from wines from Txakoli.

That said, I am happy to see that a grocer like Haggen is promoting Txakolina wine. This is the perfect Cinco de Mayo wine.

  • Heavier, less aromatic nose than expected. Mostly yellow fruit/neutral nose. Medium body, slightly atypical weight. No spritz, Good fruit, but a light bitterness detracts. Solid wine tho.

  • A blend of Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Zuri Zerratie, i.e. (in all likelihood - you never know with these crazy Basque wines) Courbu Blanc and Petit Courbu. 13,5% alcohol.

Quite pale yet pretty luminous lime green color. Youthful, primary and super-expressive nose of sweet candied fruits, some white peach, a little bit of sour apple candy, light pear tones and a hint of apple peel. The wine feels ripe and slightly sweet-toned at the tip of the tongue, but otherwise it is dry and acid-driven with light-to-medium body and flavors of ripe Granny Smith apple, white peach, some crunchy quince, a little bit of gummi bear candy, light pear tones and a paint thinner-like streak of alcohol. Bright, high acidity. Although the wine isn't particularly high in alcohol, the relatively light body of the wine doesn't feel big enough to hide the alcohol and the overall feel is somewhat warm. The finish is slightly warm ripe yet dry and quite mineral with flavors of steely minerality, ripe green apples, some tangy salinity, a little bit of apple peel bitterness, a hint of chalky minerality and a somewhat lemony-and-yeasty touch of wheat beer.

A Txakoli that feels pleasantly fruity and approachable, but perhaps a bit too warm and sweet-toned for my taste. I prefer my Txakoli wines crisp, lean and racy, whereas this was more like a fruit bomb with a surprising sense of gras for a Txakoli, yet also with a good streak of acidity. Perhaps the wine might lose some of its overtly explosive fruit character with age as the primary fruit esters blow off, but I doubt this will ever be a particularly memorable wine - it feels just too darn ripe for my taste.
