  • 2017 Domaine Belle Hermitage was robust and well-structured. The youthful Hermitage was clear and deep ruby in colour with traces of fine sediments. Compact aromatics of blackberry, black plum, game and black pepper were followed by vanilla, liquorice, and lavender essence. It kept improving over five hours of consumption.

The mouthfeel was dry and full-bodied, supported by a medium level of acidity and a high level of ripe, chewy tannin. The immense concentration and structure reflected the echelon of a Hermitage, requiring decades of bottle age to resolve. Flavours of cassis, ripe black cherry, espresso, graphite and crushed rock minerals persisted in a long, spiced finish. The 14.5% alcohol was consistent with its richness and ripeness of fruits. The empty bottle weighed 912 grams.

The Syrah vines are cultivated on the lieu-dit called Les Murets, on the eastern end of the Hermitage hill. The soil is composed of well-drained limestone with sand and gravels, with a south-facing exposition. The yield is relatively low at thirty five hectoliters per hectare. Extraction is encouraged during the vinification by daily punching down and pumping over, and a final warm maceration towards the end of five-week alcoholic fermentation. It explains its tannin structure that can be quite unforgiving in its youth. The wine is raised in equal parts of new and one-year-old French oak barrels for twenty six months.
