2023 Napa; 2/5/2023-2/9/2023 (Napa with a connection in Houston): 2018 IX Estate - I was surprised at how open this was for drinking, more darker fruit and a bit of white pepper. Not as much red fruit or herbals as I find in other Pritchard Hill wines, but I expect significant development between now and 2028 when I plan to open the first of my bottles. This is going to be great with time.

Napa 2023: the quieter version; 2/6/2023-2/11/2023 (Napa/Sonoma California): This was interesting to me. I expected the Cariad to carry things for me but the IX Estate was definitely drinking a bit more in my style. More spice notes in addition to the darker fruit. Very soft tannin. A bit more integrated. Both wines are complete babies and need lots of time before you’d want to drink them but there’s good promise there.
Deep ruby, nearly purple at its core. A towering, Herculean sort of wine; yet for all its size and power, this manages to somehow be quite graceful for the style. On the nose this offers aromas of fresh black cherries, cassis, fresh iris blossoms, peppermint, spice and hot stones. Full bodied on the palate with medium+ acidity and a high level of quite ripe tannins that remind you that this is no valley floor fruit bomb. This is impressive and notably fresh and vibrant.

No notes and only fleeting impressions as it was an epic night with both old friends and new before the Chateau Angelus dinner at Anhelo in downtown Phoenix tonight (8/31). All wines were split between 6.25 of us and unless noted, minimal decant (max 30 minutes).
Already a beautiful wine that simply needs time to settle in but has all the stuffing. Wish I had more as this is flat out gorgeous and one of my favorite Colgin in some time. Well doen.
