2018 Domaine du Grapillon d'Or Gigondas had a good balance of Grenache richness and aromatic depth. The youthful Southern Rhône blend was clear and medium ruby in colour without any noticeable sediments. Expressive aromatics of blackberry, brandied black cherry and crushed violet jumped out of the glass, followed by dark chocolate and herbes de Provence. The nose was more restrained on the second day, gaining complexities of autumn leaves and black olives.
The mouthfeel was dry and full-bodied, with medium levels of integrated acidity and powdery tannin. Intense flavours of kirsch, raspberry and garrigue transitioned to liquorice, oolong black tea and crushed rock minerals in a long, robust finish. The 15.5% alcohol was consistent with the ripeness and richness of Grenache. It is drinking well now, while having the potential to develop over a decade. The empty bottle weighed 614 grams. My only complaint was its crumbly cork, which was even more fragile than that of a twenty-year-old Bordeaux.
The winery was founded by the Chauvet family in 1806 (which is emphasised more than the vintage on the label). The blend was composed of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, raised in oak barrels for fourteen months. The Gigondas appellation sits at the foothill of Dentelles de Montmirail. The elevation and cooling Mistral wind moderate the Mediterranean heat, imparting an essential freshness to the wine.

We tasted the 2016 and 2018 side by side. The 2018 was far preferable. I don't think the 2018 will be as good in 2028 as now as 2 others have suggested. I am going with 2024 for the rest of my case.

Fresh cherries, and raspberries in the bouquet. Same on the palate, as well as some licorice, good acidity and tannin and a slight touch of bitterness in the finish.

excellent fruit, nicely balanced, nice finish. As some have stated I moved my finish range to 2015
