  • As the name suggests, these grapes grow on granite soil. Granite terrain created by the wind and geological alteration resulting in restrictive soils with good drainage. 2 hours in the decanter.

Chapoutier is one of the most recognizable producers in CdR. It is known for its wines from both the north and south of the valley, but in particular for its red Hermitage wines. Im 1879 Polydor Chapoutier transitioned the family from growing grapes to making and trading wine.
Curio - from 1996, all Chapoutier labels have included braille in honor of Maurice Monier de la Sizeranne, who created a form of modern abbreviated braille, and was the original owner of the Chapoutier vineyard in Hermitage
Let's get to the basics or smell and taste of this wine. Aromas? Lovely. Minerals of course, but also blackberry, black currant, nice red fruits, earth (I like it), graphite .Flavors? A big load of minerals, but also red cherry on the same level with spice. They come from the beginning to a long finish.
My problem with this wine - it's very well done, it's interesting, somehow unique, but at the same time it's too simple and one dimensional. Strong minerality has no counterbalance with other flavors, simply because they are not strong.

Recomendable.

  • The minerality cuts right through the ripe, fresh, sweet red berries like a knife with its salty essence. Full-bodied, crisp, spicy, rich and character driven, give this at least 5 years before pulling a cork.

  • At a recent en primeur tasting. Medium weight. Tannins more evident than in most wines of the vintage.
