A pair of Nebby twins walk into a tapas Bar (Eric&Megan's, Chicago IL): As with the Casa Mate, I knew that this had some less than stellar reviews going in but I wanted to have them as a pair and try them for myself. This shows off the ripeness of the vintage, but still with excellent complexity and depth to the tones of cinnamon, crushed rocks, dark red cherries, raspberries, roses, licorice, crushed berries, spice notes, mint leaves, vanilla, and currants. The Full bodied feel is plush and balanced with crisp, high acidity and silky, high tannins. Again, this is a love it or hate it wine. I'm not necessarily in the love it camp, but like with the Casa Mate, I do enjoy it for what it is but I won't be buying up any bottles to hold.

Tasting at Elio Grasso: The '18 Gavarini Chiniera is a solid wine in this difficult vintage. While I generally prefer the Gavarini Chiniera, in 2018 the difference is especially notable. On the nose, I found simple aromatics of light red fruits, a touch of exotic tropical fruits, and a bit of fresh red roses and fresh, savory herbs. It is clearly on the lighter side just from the aromatics. On the palate, the wine is light in body with light red, somewhat diluted fruit and fresh red floral tones. The profile is pretty but not complex. At the back end, the wine shows slightly grainy tannins which detract a bit from the otherwise very elegant profile. It is not super tannic, but given how light the rest of the wine is, the tannins stick out more than they otherwise would.
