  • The '79 Gavarini Chiniera was in surprisingly great shape. According to Galloni, 1979 was the first vintage officially released by Grasso, so this was a real treat to taste.

The nose was nicely perfumed with dried rose petal, smoked meats, and sour red cherry. On the palate, the wine was super elegant, medium to light in body with the tannins fully integrated and showing good vibrancy with medium to high acidity. I found dried roses and cherries, smoked meats, dried herbs, earth, and leather. The finish was long, with smoke, leather, and earth along with sour red cherry and fresh mint adding some freshness.

The '79 is a wine of elegance rather than power, fitting what I've heard about the vintage. It's fully mature, but was certainly much more vibrant than I expected.
