  • Powerful and ripe. There is some development on the nose, its yellow fruits are getting a golden hue. Slightly aromatic, a touch of jelly sweets hint about the variety. Viscous and full on the palate, yet delicate in a way. A complex, lush white with well integrated oak. Serious stuff. Drink now.

  • Bargain Hunter or Just Cheap?

Once again, my reputation precedes me.

While browsing through the many isles of my local mega-wine store, and having been recognized by one of the very helpful salespeople, I was asked, as I am most of the time, if I needed any assistance looking for anything. My usual response is that I’m just looking. But on this particular day, I, for some reason, decided to put all my cards on the table and announce that I was looking for any wines that might be a “close out.” They have a slightly different name for it, but the associate knew what I was saying.

This exchange just happened while I was in front of the wines from France, more specifically, white wines from France. There in full view of both of us was today’s wine, which just so happened to be on sale at over 40% off the regular price!

Now I love Viognier, especially from the Rhone Valley. Along with the “Sale” sticker, was a short descriptor of the wine, which just happened to include the fact that the wine had received a whopping 95 Point review. A quick check on my phone and I discovered it had also garnered a couple of 94 Point reviews and one at 93 Points.

Heavily discounted and with rave reviews, I was not going to leave the store without it!

It was about that time that the associate said I was a great “bargain hunter.” I’m not sure why, but that term just seemed to hit me in an odd way. Personally, I just think of myself as “cheap.” Maybe I was being given an offhanded compliment? It was just one of those things that I don’t think of all the time, but when confronted with my own quirks, I had to step back for a moment.

    Okay, moment over!

While located in Gigondas, St. Cosme produces a variety of wines, both from the Northern and Southern Regions. They consider themselves to be a "Negociant-Vigneron," both producing and buying grapes from numerous areas. From the selections that I have had, they excel in quality, much as today’s wine does.

There is a creaminess with a crispness that excites. Notes of pear and almond intertwine with subtle minerality in this medium-bodied wine that leads to a substantial finish.

The wine consists of 100% Viognier and spends 8 months aging 40% in casks used once, 30% in casks used twice, and 40% in casks used three times, surely adding to the structure and velvety feel on the palate.

One should not concern themselves with vintage, as this wine has excelled year after year. What I can’t guarantee is that you’ll find it as competitively priced as I did, but then again, remember, I’m cheap!

    Cheers

  • Pear and apricot, medium acid. Still very good on day two. Had not changed much from the last time I had this 18 months ago.

  • Best served slightly on the warmer side, to enhance the strong floral nose of this wine. Apricots, maybe a hint of green apple. A creamy, voluptuous body ending in a smooth, lemony minerality that is not at all tart. Last of our supply and sad to see it go...

  • A big, often oafish Viognier that seems a product of the vintage's high temps. Enjoyable but seems new worldish.
